The Best Garage Chair I’ve Used, Now with EZ Lift

I’ve bought and used enough cheap rolling stools to know where they usually fall apart. The small casters get caught on everything, the seat foam compresses, the base never feels particularly stable, and the height adjustment either does not provide enough range or eventually stops holding its position.

That is why I originally brought the Vyper Industrial Robust Steel Max into the Obsessed Garage store. I wanted a garage chair that rolled properly, felt stable underneath me, and was comfortable enough to use while working around a car for more than a few minutes.

The new EZ Lift version improves one of the only parts of the original chair that required any real effort: adjusting the height.

Instead of getting off the chair and spinning the seat up or down on a threaded post, the EZ Lift system lets you raise or lower it in one smooth motion. According to Vyper, the seat adjusts from 17 to 22.5 inches. That gives you enough range to move between cleaning wheels, detailing lower body panels, working at a bench, and handling other jobs around the garage without changing chairs.

How It Performs in the Garage

The oversized 4-inch casters are still one of the main reasons I like this chair. I’ve used it on Swisstrax flooring, where it rolls smoothly without constantly catching between tiles. The larger casters also handle extension cords, zip ties, small floor transitions, cracks, and the other crap that inevitably ends up on a working garage floor much better than the tiny casters found on most shop stools.

Two of the casters can be locked when you need the chair to stay in position.

The seat uses 3.5 inches of industrial-grade foam, and it feels substantially more supportive than the thin padding found on cheaper stools. The lumbar-support backrest is also positioned where it is actually useful rather than being added simply so the chair can claim it has a backrest.

Vyper rates the steel frame for up to 400 pounds. I have not personally load-tested it to that limit, but the chair feels extremely rigid and stable during normal use, without the twisting or rocking you get from inexpensive rolling stools.

Is It Worth the Price?

There is no getting around it: this is an expensive garage chair.

I had the same reaction the first time I saw the price. Spending this much on what appears to be a rolling shop stool sounds ridiculous until you assemble it, sit in it, and start moving around the garage.

The difference is immediately noticeable. It rolls better, feels more stable, provides actual support, and is built like a piece of shop equipment rather than disposable garage furniture.

This is not the chair I would recommend to someone looking for the cheapest place to sit. It is the chair I recommend to someone who spends a meaningful amount of time in the garage and is tired of buying stools that are uncomfortable, unstable, or ready for the trash after a few years.

It is about as close to an end-game garage chair as I’ve found, and I would expect it to outlive me.
