The Best Garage Chair for Taller Workbenches, Now with EZ Lift

The standard Robust Steel Max is the garage chair I’d choose for working around a car, cleaning wheels, detailing lower panels, and sitting at a conventional workbench. The Elevated Steel Max is built for an entirely different working height.

This is the chair for taller fabrication tables, welding benches, woodworking benches, reloading stations, and standing-height workstations where a normal shop chair leaves you sitting several inches too low. If you’ve deliberately built your bench higher so you can work without hunching over, it doesn’t make much sense to pair it with a chair that forces you right back into an uncomfortable position.

The Elevated Steel Max takes the same heavy-duty construction as the Robust Steel Max and raises the seat-height range from 17-22.5 inches to 24-29.5 inches. That additional height puts you in a much better position for work surfaces designed to be used while standing or sitting at counter height.

The biggest update to this version is the new EZ Lift height adjustment. Instead of getting off the chair and spinning the seat up or down on a threaded post, you can smoothly raise or lower it in one motion. That makes it easier to fine-tune your position as you move between different workstations or tasks.

Built for an Actual Working Garage

The oversized 4-inch casters are one of the main reasons I like the Vyper chairs. They roll substantially better than the tiny casters used on most shop stools and are large enough to move across extension cords, zip ties, floor transitions, cracks, and the other crap that inevitably ends up on a working garage floor.

The base is wide and stable, which becomes even more important on a chair that sits this high. Two of the casters can also be locked when you need the chair to remain in position while welding, fabricating, or working at a bench.

The seat uses 3.5 inches of industrial-grade foam, providing considerably more support than the thin padding found on cheaper stools. The lumbar-support backrest is also positioned where it can provide useful support instead of feeling like something added simply to check a box.

Vyper specifies the seat, frame, and casters as flame-retardant components intended for welding and fabrication environments. That does not make the chair fireproof, but it does make the Elevated Steel Max a more appropriate choice around sparks and hot work than a conventional upholstered office or shop chair.

Vyper rates the steel frame for up to 400 pounds. I have not personally load-tested it to that limit, but the construction is extremely rigid and feels more like a piece of shop equipment than disposable garage furniture.

Who Should Buy the Elevated Version?

The Elevated Steel Max is not automatically better than the standard Robust Steel Max. It is the correct chair for a specific working height.

Choose the Elevated Steel Max if you regularly work at:

    • Fabrication or welding tables

    • Counter-height workbenches

    • Taller woodworking benches

    • Reloading benches

    • TIG welding stations

    • Standing-height assembly tables

    • Elevated computer or production workstations

For cleaning wheels, detailing lower vehicle panels, or working close to the floor, the standard Robust Steel Max will generally be the better choice.

    Is It Worth the Price?

There is no getting around it: this is an expensive shop chair.

I had the same reaction when I first saw the price of a Vyper. Spending this much on what appears to be a rolling stool sounds ridiculous until you assemble one, sit in it, and start using it around the shop.

The difference is immediately noticeable. It rolls better, feels substantially more stable, provides actual support, and is built like something you should only have to buy once.

This is not the chair I would recommend to someone looking for the cheapest place to sit. It is the chair for someone who spends a meaningful amount of time at a taller workbench and is tired of standing all day or hunching over from a chair that is several inches too short.

It is about as close to an end-game elevated shop chair as I’ve found, and I’d expect it to outlive me.
