I've seen a whole lot of toolboxes over the years.  You know me, I like the fancy stuff.  In the world of toolboxes, the Sonic ones aren't particularly expensive.  I never understood why someone would spend $10,000 on a mediocre box.  I always thought, "Why in the world would someone spend 25% of their annual income on some so-so stuff?"  Before I actually went to Sonic HQ in Auburn, I saw a few of their S11 boxes at Atlanta Motorsports Park.  I love the MSS cabinet line but not the toolboxes I saw.  I thought, "I'll chase toolboxes from some other company later."  When I finally made it to SonicUSA HQ, I asked them to open up one of each of their toolboxes.  They were all in a line: S8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.  I got to touch and feel each one of them.  It was really obvious to me almost immediately, the S9, 12, and 12XD were legit, but I didn't like any of the other ones.

It's has been on my list for about a year now, but I felt like I needed to get them in my garage to really get hands-on to give a solid assessment.  So...I bought the three that I liked and had them sent to OGHQ to make sure I was correct, but let's be honest, I just wanted to play with them.  After spending a bunch of time rolling around the garage, I like them more than I thought I would.  The casters are legit, they are completely compatible with Sonic Foam Inlays for tools, and have the usual amazing Sonic fit and finish.

The S9 is equipped with 8 drawers operated by ball bearing slides. The angles of the toolbox have a strengthening profile, which results in more firmness and stability for a longer life cycle. The S9 is available in a dark grey exterior. The S9 toolbox houses small and medium foam inlay sizes.

What you need to know

  • If you can fit the depth and width, I like the S12XD the most of the three.
  • You really want to build your array of tool using MEDIUM for the S9.
  • Casters are the same on the S9 and S12.  S12XD has larger, more robust casters.  All have brakes.  Each box has two pivoting and two fixed casters.
  • Handles are super stout for pushing the boxes around.

FAQ & Support

The S9 toolbox ships on a pallet with plenty of packing around it to protect the edges. The 5-inch casters (two swiveling/locking) also come pre-installed. In less than 10 minutes you can have the shrink-wrap off all four foam tool trays, the towel bar installed, and both can holders mounted to the sides of the toolbox.
